Casual Healing

Casual Healing joins us in 2026 for WAIATA ANTHEMS on 12 July, 7pm at the Michael Fowler Centre.

Intimacy, connection – human and spiritual – has been embedded into the foundations of Nikau Te Huki’s artistry. For over 10 years, the journey this Pōneke-based creative has been on has yielded incredible musical results that have mirrored life experiences loved, lived and learned from.

Making an impressive debut in 2024 with debut album DRIFTWOOD, Casual Healing wasted no time in captivating audiences across sold out tours and festival appearances that have included, but have not been limited to, SXSW Sydney, Rhythm & Vines, TSB Festival of Lights and more.

What has made these performances so captivating, is the way Casual Healing has let the music bring people together. It does not discriminate, instead offering an unique and texturally rich space for music lovers in general, to come together and experience a kindred connection.

Redefining himself as an artist in 2025, Casual Healing will record and release a series of 4 EPs inspired by Te Taiao, the natural world. Each EP is unique in genre and theme, representing the balance of four key elements in our world, AHI (fire), HAU (wind), WAI (water) and ONE (earth).

AHI, released on April 11th 2025, received a plethora of praise for its rawness and originality. ‘Aroha’ is a touchstone of the AHI project, and represents a special part of Nikau’s life – his relationship with his partner, and the life they are building together. ‘Hypersensitive’ is a slow burning tale of the pleasure and pain that comes
with embracing our innate sensitivity as humans. AHI has become the renowned fiery intro of the 2025 series.

HAU, released on July 11th, showed us a more introspective angle of Casual Healing’s artistry. The EP paints a melancholic story of the struggle Nikau faced in his personal life while writing HAU. ‘U and I’ Is a roots/soul moment that reminds us all of the common thread that weaves us all as one people on earth, and the EPs outro ‘Many Good Years’ speaks to the end of a chapter with some of Nikaus closest friends, pulling on the wisdom that comes with retrospect.

ONE is the coming together of people, places, times and memories. This EP will be recorded at Massey Studio with a live session video to accompany the grand finale of a truly remarkable year of creativity for Casual Healing..

The final two EPs are officially written and are due for release on the September 26th (WAI) and December 12th (ONE).

2024 was a breakthrough year for Casual Healing, as his unique style of Māori roots-soul fusion continued to gain traction at home in Aotearoa, while also seeding itself brilliantly across a string of successful shows in Australia.
Armed with his debut album DRIFTWOOD – named as one of Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s ‘Best New Zealand Albums of 2024’ – Casual Healing became a fresh champion for Aotearoa’s thriving music scene outside of his home nation, and was recognised as such.

His music has proven its reach within the indie and commercial spaces; multiple singles from DRIFTWOOD achieving NZ Official Hot Singles chart success, substantial commercial radio airplay, and editorial playlist support via Spotify
including Fresh Finds AU/NZ, Waiata Reo Maori, Dinner Mood, R&B Feels and more, and Apple Music’s New Music Daily.

Ever aware of the power of his platform, as well as the power of music, Nikau completed this DRIFTWOOD arc with knowledge and self-awareness about him that has been taken into the studio; the multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter readying his next layered Casual Healing project.

With the roll out of Ahi, Hau, Wai and One, new and longtime fans alike will see Casual Healing at his most ambitious creative peak to date; also set to become his most dynamic offering of self.
