MĀ
MĀ joins us in 2026 for WAIATA ANTHEMS on 12 July, 7pm at the Michael Fowler Centre.
Somewhere between a singer, rapper, spoken word poet, beatmaker, producer, and bandleader, MĀ is an autodidact Māori artist from Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. Since releasing her selfproduced debut Breakfast With Hades, she has earned acclaim from Radio New Zealand, Rolling Stone, and Vice, toured with Avantdale Bowling Club, and opened for Saya Gray, Ice Cube, Souls of Mischief, Clear Path Ensemble, and Homebrew.
In 2025, MĀ completed her first headline tour across Aotearoa, selling out four of five shows, before taking her music to Wales and Australia. Her 2026 run included WOMADelaide, alongside winning Best Alternative Artist at the 2026 Aotearoa Music Awards.
Her work blends abstract downtempo rap, DIY neo-soul, and ambient textures, grounded in te taiao, whakapapa, and emotional honesty. Now entering a new phase, MĀ is developing a reo-rua, dancefocused third album, with Homai E signalling a more rhythm-led direction.
