Barbara joins us in 2025 to perform in THE ARTIST REPENTS on Saturday 22 November.
Native New Yorker and adopted Kiwi Barbara Paterson is delighted to return to sing with Orchestra Wellington in 2025. An experienced operatic and concert soprano, Barbara is also a sought-after specialist in contemporary and inter-disciplinary art music.
Barbara has recently appeared with Stroma, Java Dance, the Royal NZ Air Force Band, NZ Opera, the Auckland Chamber Orchestra, the Audio Foundation, Wanderlust Opera, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and she performs chamber music frequently with the Āmiki Trio (with flautist Karen Batten and pianist Rachel Thomson) and with pianist Gabriela Glapska. She is a regular soloist with choirs around the country, most recently with Wellington choir Nota Bene, in an interactive choral theatre event “German RomCom” (cond. Maaike Christie-Beekman and directed by Jacqueline Coats). Her season of Francis Poulenc’s “The Human Voice” for the 2020 Aotearoa NZ Festival of the Arts was reviewed as “magnificent” and “exemplary”. Barbara can be heard as a soloist on Stephen Gallagher's acclaimed soundtrack for the 2024 anime film, "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim".
Barbara is currently an Artist Teacher of Classical Voice at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music. She has full teaching studios at Wellington East Girls' College and Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, where she is also the vocal coach for the schools’ award-winning choirs, and she has conducted Wellington’s Capital Choir since 2018. She is a former Resident Artist and Emerging Artist for NZ Opera, and she has a MMus from Westminster Choir College, a BMus from Te Kōkī NZSM and a BA in German from Te Herenga Waka VUW.
