Classical on Cuba Returns August 9–10, 2025 — A Weekend of Bold Collaborations in Wellington’s Cuba Street Quarter

WELLINGTON, NZ - Classical on Cuba is back once more, bringing a fresh programme of enchanting classical music fused with contemporary energy. Set for Saturday and Sunday, August 9–10, 2025, the two-day classical music crawl along the Cuba Street Quarter promises something for every music lover of every age. It’s classical music for the curious at heart.

Festival Highlights & Access for All

  • The ever-popular Classical Crawl, where audiences can wander between intimate venues for just $10 per show, returns, promising fresh discoveries at every turn.

  • A diverse lineup of special performances and late-night sessions ($30 and under), highlighting cross genre vibes. Think taonga pūoro meets jazz or indie folk meets classical. Get ready for an evening of ambient, immersive experiences and boundary-pushing commissions.

  • Family-friendly daytime programming. With free events and interactive music for tamariki during the day. Children under 5 are admitted free of charge.

Venues Across the Quarter

The festival unfolds across a vibrant mix of venues: from the local community spot Thistle Hall and the grand Michael Fowler Centre to energetic local bars like Southern Cross Garden Bar, and the beloved Rogue & Vagabond. These spaces host cross-genre performances — think Beethoven duets sharing the stage with jazz improvisation, enhancing classical textures, and opera voices heard throughout Cuba Street.

“Classical on Cuba is all about bringing collaboration and creativity to the heart of Wellington,” says Kim Bailey, Chief Executive at CCAT. “We’re thrilled to unite classical players with electronic, jazz, indie and more — creating accessible and unexpected musical moments across two unforgettable days. It’s the perfect bite-size event for those new to classical music.”

“Orchestra Wellington is proud to stand alongside CCAT, nurturing connections across genres and audiences. After a few years of evolution, this festival truly embodies the creative vibrancy of Cuba Street,” adds Beckie Lockhart, Chief Executive of Orchestra Wellington.

About Classical on Cuba

Classical on Cuba began in 2021 as a creative collaboration between CCAT and Orchestra Wellington, responding to the 2020 cancellation of CubaDupa. It has blossomed into a two-day celebration featuring commissioned works, family events, and audacious cross-genre partnerships. Classical on Cuba is held annually in Wellington's Cuba Street Quarter.
